Minerals from the Francon Quarry, Quebec

This is an initial offering of twelve top quality specimens representing eleven different species from one of Canada's top localities, which is now essentially defunct (turned into a garbage dump). This is the cream of the Sheerin-Powell collection, collected roughly from 1970 to1990.

While this is by and large the best Francon material I have in stock, many other specimens are available, from micromount to cabinet size. Other species and habits are also available, and will be eventually posted here if there is enough interest. Tell me what you need -->tjokela@execulink.com. Analytical work now underway will hopefully reveal some interesting things, so stay tuned.

All but the weloganites require magnification for best appreciation. All are superbly crystallized and are sure to please. I think it's safe to say that such a selection of Francon material in one place is simply not available anywhere else on the net. First come, first served. Please order by number.

FRAN3 - DAWSONITE, QUARTZ, GOETHITE, BARITE, FLUORITE - A 35x20 mm vug is lined with innumerable superb clear colorless dawsonite prisms. Light dustings of minute goethite needles lightly tint the dawsonite. Also present are minor amounts of small, curving, platy yellowish barite, crusts of colorless subhedral fluorite, and modestly xln quartz. Collected in '77. 35x20x15mm, $35

FRAN5 - GALENA, WELOGANITE, QUARTZ, CALCITE, FLUORITE, DAWSONITE - Four tiny (~0.5mm) but very sharp and lustrous metallic crystals of galena scattered amongst numerous quartz sheaves, with superbly crystallized colorless weloganite and minor associates. 50x25x20mm, $25

FRAN6 - MARCASITE, QUARTZ, FLUORITE, BARITE, DAWSONITE - Half of one surface is loaded with clumps of twinned tabular marcasite xls to a few mm, reasonably appreciable with little or no magnification. Associated with small curving barite xls, bits of purple fluorite, and minor quartz, dawsonite. 55x50x40mm, $16

FRAN8 - PYRITE, WELOGANITE, ALBITE, QUARTZ, CALCITE, ANALCIME, DAWSONITE - An exquisite sparkling druse, 20mm across, of super-sharp bright iridescent modified cubes to ~0.5mm. White weloganite xls, skeletal quartz xls, bladed white albite, calcite in tabular pseudomorphs after an unknown precursor, and minor analcime and dawsonite are also present. 35x30x20mm, $15

FRAN12 - WELOGANITE, DRESSERITE, MARCASITE, CALCITE, QUARTZ, ALBITE, + UK - Flat-lying 7 to 13mm yellow to cream colored tapering xls, with superbly crystallized dresserite, in white balls to 3mm, with other minor associates. Excellent with and without magnification, a nice combination piece. An unknown white massive mineral is present which requires analysis to ID. The matrix has 3 sawn surfaces, not unusual for the locality, which produces fragile crystals on a hard matrix. 85x70x45mm, $90

FRAN13 - WELOGANITE, DRESSERITE, MARCASITE, QUARTZ, CALCITE - A huge weloganite xl, 40x17mm, the front faces sadly incomplete, with about forty zillion dresserite balls (superb under the scope), in a deep vug. The matrix has four sawn faces, pretty much the only way to safely reduce the matrix on such an important specimen. The largest weloganite crystal in stock; if it was complete there'd be another zero on the price. 90x80x70mm, $300
