I use a SuperBright SW UV unit to study fluorescence; this is a very powerful light so results may vary using other models. If the specimens don't shine as well as you hoped, you're protected by my return policy.
AGRELLITE, Kipawa, Quebec - TYPE LOCALITY- Typical xln/massive cleavages, nice pink SW fluorescence, most with a bit of bright red massive eudialyte. Known from only a few localities. A smallish piece of a few cm for $4; good rich pieces in the range of 7 cm only $10.
CALCITE, Grand River occurrence, Paris, Ontario, Canada - Drusy xln white to yellow calcite coatings on matrix fluoresce a nice mild yellow under SWUV. Miniature to cabinet sizes, $4 to $12
CALCITE, San Vicente, west of Boquillas, Coahuila State, Mexico - Attractive pink/red and white cleavage masses; hit 'em with the SW and they glow a bright bluish white, turn the light off and they phosphoresce for about 4 seconds or more. Ideal stuff for wowing anybody new to fluorescence. 3-5cm, $4 each
FLUORITE, Dundas Quarry, near Hamilton, Wentworth County, Ontario - yellow/brown generally imperfect cubes, 10-15mm, little or no matrix, pale yellow/white fluorescence under SW UV, TNs $4 each
FLUORITE, Amherstburg Quarry, near Windsor, Ontario - Druses of sparkling brown cubes to 3mm across lining vugs, rich, with a bit of limestone matrix. Pale yellow fluorescence in SW UV. 100 mm piece, $10
GYPSUM, Red River Flooodway, Winnipeg, Manitoba - Solid balls of amber blades, 25-65mm overall, with nice creamy-yellow fluorescence under SW UV. one at 25mm for $4; one 40x30x20mm at $6
HYDROZINCITE, AURICHALCITE, ++, Los Azules Mine, 345 km east of Copiapo, Chile - Chalky white massive hydrozincite, fluoresces blue-white under SW UV, lining aurichalcite-filled vugs.
MELLITE, Csordakut Mine, Tatabanya, Hungary - A pair of connected brown xls, well formed and with decent luster, the largest 22mm across. That's just under an inch, and that is a good sized mellite xl. One corner of the main xl is missing, and there is one other contact, otherwise nicely formed. Nice blue FL under SW. An unusual mineral found in coal mines, perhaps a half dozen localities known. TN, $75
META-AUTUNITE, Streuberg Quarry, near Bergen, Vogtland District, Saxony, Germany - Fine thumbnails and small miniatures, bright yellow-green and beautifully crystallized, little or no matrix. Radioactive, with intense dayglo fluorescence under SW UV. Spectacular specimens, $35-75
PENFIELDITE, BOLEITE, Margarita Mine, Sierra Gorda, Antofagasta, Chile - Good colorless hexagonal prisms to a few mm long in vugs, with varying amounts of sandy blue subhedral boleite. Excellent under the scope. (Small stuff, so don't expect knock-out UV display material.) Fluoresces orangish under SW UV. 3-5cm pieces, $20
POWELLITE, Aurangabad district, Maharashtra State, India - Enormous white crystals, and smaller golden-yellow crystals with lustrous white stilbite blades and white heulandite crystals. Excellent bright creamy-yellow fluorescence under SW UV. Nice selection, crystals to 6cm - over TWO INCHES! Prices reduced.
POWELLITE, Jardinera No.1 Mine, 5 km E of Inca de Oro, Atacama Province, Chile -Small (~2-5mm) greenish-yellow xls and xl druses, on miniature sized matrices. Not a rare mineral, but only a few localities have produced crystals. This is the type locality for szenicsite; see Min Rec V28, #5, p.387. All specimens require 20x for best appreciation. Nice yellow fluorescence under SW UV.
POW-B, 60x40x40mm, rich, with larger xls to 5mm, $75
POW-D, 50x40x20mm, modest xls in tight druses, $30
POW-E, 40x30x30mm, $75, excellent 5mm xl
SCHEELITE, PYRRHOTITE, CanTung Mine, Tungsten, Mackenzie Mountains, Northwest Territories, Canada - Masses of rich bronzy pyrrhotite with countless small disseminated flecks of scheelite from 1-5mm in size, most specimens with at least one sawn face. Really nice blue-white fluorescence under SW UV, like a starry sky. Great ore samples!
Small, 5-6cm across, $5
Medium, 7-10 cm across, $9 each
Large, 10-13cm across, $19 each
SCHEELITE, Lamaque Mine, Val D'Or, Quebec - A nearly pure chunk of golden-brown scheelite. This mine produced 4.5 million ounces of gold over a period of fifty years. Super blue-white fluorescence, and not that bad looking in regular light. Mounted on a walnut base. 60x40x30mm, $12
SODALITE, Mont Saint-Hilaire, Quebec - Classic color change material, starts off purple/pink, fades in sunlight, color comes back with exposure to SW UV. Good, colorful stuff, one of the coolest optical phenomenon in the whole mineral kingdom. Various sizes -nothing huge- available at low prices, TN $3, MIN, $5
STEACYITE, AEGIRINE, in CHAROITE, Murun Massif, Aldan, south of Olekminsk, between Olekma and Chara Rivers, Yakutia, Russia - The steacyite is fairly inconspicuous until you hit it with SW UV, whereupon it glows green. One left: four small tabular crystal sections to 7mm with a nice 20mm black aegirine sun, embedded in solid lilac charoite, 55x20x15mm, $30
